Tailoring the future of a country is no child’s play and one of the presidents of the United States of America did exactly that. Even though he could not enjoy formal education, he changed the fate of an entire country for the better. He was a champion of the cause of the people of the country and his story is truly worth reading.

Date and place of death – July 31, 1875, Carter’s Station, Tennessee
Cause of death – A sudden attack of stroke during a visit to his family and daughter, who was staying in Tennessee at that time.
Spouse – Eliza McCardle Johnson
At the initial stages of his career, he was serving as the military governor of the state of Tennessee and later became known for passing several bills in the parliament. Being a true blue Southerner, he was thought to be the perfect candidate for presidency. In fact, he helped rebuild the nation after the Civil War was over. Despite his problems, he did not stop working toward the welfare of the country and that is what makes him great.

  1. His humble beginnings as a tailor helped him stitch his own clothes throughout his presidency and lifetime.
  2. Andrew Johnson was honored after his death by placing a copy of the US Constitution like a pillow in his coffin and his body was covered in the American flag.
  3. He loved books so much that he used to pay someone or another to read them out to him as he stitched his own clothes.
  4. Johnson never ran for president again in the year 1868. The reason behind this was that he thought that he would be automatically reelected, but that did not happen.
  5. He briefly suffered from typhoid fever and ended up drinking just before the inauguration ceremony and address, making people think that he was an abuser of alcohol though he was not.
  6. His wife was the person, who taught him the skills he lacked, including writing, reading, and math since he could not go to school.
  7. The other woman, who made him learn the tailoring trade, was his mother since he had no other schooling due to extreme poverty.
  8.  He worked toward reforming the American government and systems that were created by the former politicians.
  9. Andrew Johnson was the first president to have purchased Alaska from the Russian Federation by negotiating through the American Secretary of State, William Seward.
  10. He expressed opposition to the Fourteenth Amendment of the American Constitution. It gave African-American people the right to acquire a US citizenship.
  11. Johnson was impeached since he tried to acquire administrative rights and just one vote acquitted him for a lifetime. He could never become president after that.
Andrew Johnson possibly had nine lives since he survived almost getting killed. Nonetheless, he never gave up on his dreams of protecting the welfare of the country and worked hard till the very last day of his life.
